106: What is a UUPG and What Do We Need to Do About Them?

LISTEN TO THE EPISODE ABOVE

Summary:

Unreached people groups (UPG) lists have been around for a long time.  The global church has made steady progress in seeing these UPGs reached and many have now come off those lists as they are now not only reached, but are reaching others and sending workers into the harvest.  Yet many hidden groups remain, sometimes more than we realize, groups that nobody is working among or focusing on.  How do we find them?  What needs to happen to see the unserved peoples of the world have gospel witness? Today on the podcast, Cynthia will interview two men who are passionately working to bring focus and coordination to this strategic need.

Key Points From This Episode:

  • An unreached people group measures how responsive a group has been to the gospel so far. When people have gone, has there been response to the gospel?
  • An unengaged unreached people group shows how responsive the global church has been to that group.  Has anyone gone to them yet?
  • A people is unengaged until these four criteria are met.
    A. Presence:  There is a Christ-proclaiming presence among the people.
    B. Persistence:  That Christian presence is over time, not simply a drop-in or fly-by.
    C. Cultural Sensitivity:  The gospel is communicated in the language of the people in ways that resonate and are relevant to them.
    D. Sowing with Intent:  Self-replicating churches and movements within the group are intentionally nurtured.
  • It’s time to bring back the term “hidden” people groups because when we actually go on the ground to research in many places we are finding there are still groups that have had no engagement yet.
  • Our starting point is to ask God to break our heart for what is breaking His heart in relation to these groups.
  • We can also begin by educating ourselves via the websites given below.

    peoplegroups.org
    Unengagedpeoples.com
  • The “list keepers” are open to input if on the ground your are aware of groups that are already engaged by yourselves or others you are aware of.
  • Ownership at the local and regional level of indigenous leaders is going to be key to seeing the UUPGs reached
  • Multiplication of disciples is also a major key to finishing this task and making sure all are not only engaged (though that is the first step) but reached with the good news.
