98: Do you Focus on Reaching the Lost or Training the Saved?

Summary:

In this week’s episode, Cynthia answers a question about focus.  If someone’s working in a new area, where there are very few Christians, should they focus their attention on finding a person of peace among the lost, or training the existing Christian to reach their own people?  Cynthia shares pros and cons of both approaches.

• Some call the insider Christian who welcomes you a person of peace as well, someone through whom you can work
• Cynthia prefers to call them a local partner, definitely want to find those
• It’s important to weigh the Advantages and disadvantages to training local indigenous pastors vs discipling someone to Christ yourself from that local community.
• Some advantages to training Christian pastors are; they already have a resource pool of harvesters they can mobilize, and they already have good biblical understanding and hopefully Christian integrity and ethics, have worked through discipleship issues like addictions, etc
• Some disadvantages are; pastors can be slow to adopt DMM principles fully, they have more to lose in salary, status, denominational backing, etc.and pastors are sometimes less trainable, while a new disciple will learn from you from the beginning and not develop legacy church habits
• As you begin, survey the local Christian and pastor pool (in some places this is very small) to see if you find people who are desperate enough to reach the lost to be willing to change, or young enough to be ready to experiment with non-traditional approaches
• Pray for Divine appointments with EITHER a POP or a Local Partner
• Model a seed sowing lifestyle and see who God gives you.
• This is really a Both/And not either or answer.  But generally speaking I’d say give 70% focus to the lost and 30% to the saved and you are more likely to find that key person who will catalyze a movement.
