Never in history has a world-wide shut down of this magnitude occurred. With so many self-isolating and practicing social distancing, it could make our job of disciple making much harder. Many would say, “Take a break. Start disciple making efforts again when this is all over.” The problem is, we have no idea when that will be. During this time, we must stay active in disciple making. Let us even look for ways to increase our efforts.
There are many ways to look at a situation like this. How is God looking at it? What is He wanting to do through it?
Get God’s Perspective
It is vital that we get His perspective and cooperate with Him. Quiet your heart and listen. What does God want you to do?
Whatever you do, don’t slow down your evangelism and disciple making efforts. Accelerate them! A world in crisis needs to hear about a Jesus who loves them. They need to know His perfect love that drives out fear.
It is a perfect time to share a testimony of the peace He has given you. There has never been a better time to reach out. When people are afraid, they are unusually open to talking about spiritual matters. It’s a great time to invite people to join you in studying the Word of God, even if that happens virtually.
Zoom and WhatsApp Groups
A few days ago I had a zoom call with friends, we studied 1 John 4:13-18 together. We talked about how we were making disciples and who we were reaching out to during this time. In our group, we prayed, encouraged each other, and made plans to share these scriptures with others. You can watch an example of that below. The video quality isn’t wonderful, but you will get the idea!
The next day, I led a WhatsApp group call. There, I did the same with three of the students from my Getting Started in Disciple Making Movements course. We studied Isaiah 43:1-7. Again, everyone left the group encouraged, feeling cared for, and ready to find someone to minister to. We will meet again in a week.
As per my action steps, I sent messages to people on my Lost list. I shared scriptures and encouraged them. Pointing them to Jesus, I started spiritual conversations.
Don’t Shrink Back
“But we do not belong to those who shrink back and are destroyed, but to those who have faith and are saved.”
Heb. 10:39 NIV.
How will you continue to be an active disciple maker at this time?
This is not a time to shrink back, but to press forward. Don’t give in to fear. Tune your ears to the Master’s voice. Block out the doom and gloom in the media. Look for ways to be a blessing and help to those in need. God is at work. He will draw many into His Kingdom as we are active in disciple making.
The Great Commission didn’t get put on hold. God hasn’t hit the pause button on the advance of His Kingdom. Instead, He is accelerating things. Will you play your part? Join Him to see His Kingdom grow like never before during this crisis!
I’d love to hear how you doing during this time. Do you have questions about how to continue to be a disciple maker during this time? Let me know what those are in the comments below or on the Disciple Making Movements Facebook page.
