Episode 67: What is Friendly Accountability in Disciple-making?

LISTEN TO THE EPISODE ABOVE

Summary:

Accountability can be a scary word for many. Yet learning to practice “friendly accountability” is a key in multiplying disciples. Cynthia shares on this episode about how to make this part of your life and the groups you lead.

Key Points from this episode:

  • Accountability can be scary and threatening if we have had people in our lives who were harsh, abusive, or overbearing.
  • Practicing friendly accountability is not the same as controlling someone.
  • Never scold people.  Changing someone into Christ-likeness is not our job, it’s the work of the Holy Spirit.
  • We do have a responsibility to create a safe space where we can share honestly and vulnerably as we try to practice the things God is teaching us from His Word.
  • Be willing to share your own struggles honestly with your group, model for them and make them feel safe.  You don’t have to be perfect.  When you fail, be real about it.
  • In the look back section ask: How did we do at obeying what God was speaking to us last week?  How did we do at sharing Jesus with others?
  • Don’t be afraid of accountability, embrace it as part of growing as a disciple.
