LISTEN TO THE EPISODE ABOVE

Summary:

On today’s podcast Cynthia interviews Justin Long, Director of Research for Beyond about global trends, what is happening with movements generally, and asks hard questions about how numbers are reported and tracked. Get Justin’s weekly global update at: www.justinlong.org/roundup

Key Points From This Episode:

  • Movements tend to thrive and grow in situations that would break others.
  • There are eight movement families that are over a million each.
  • The kind of people who start and work in movements are highly passionate about reaching the lost and unevangelized.
  • The oldest modern movement is not over 30 million!
  • Collaboration is a spiritual discipline.  We choose to work together to build a family that will last for generations.
  • Working in collaboration requires us to pray together, lay down personal desires, and focus on advancing His Kingdom.  But this kind of spirit is characteristic of movements.
  • Don’t offer what you have to emerging movements ask them “What is it you actually need?”
  • 50% of movements are fairly small, just emerging and have a few thousand people.
  • 10 or so are around the 100,000 mark.
  • Most of the big numbers we see come from these families of movements that have a loose identity, leadership and are rapidly expanding.
  • The same tracking criteria that is used by the World Christian Encyclopedia for churches and denominations is also used for movement tracking.
  • Make a list of 100 people you know.  Are the majority of them Christians?
  • Ask yourself, how can I make the sacrifice of beginning to be more with non-Christians and less with Christians?

Yes, that is a real challenge. My suggestion is you change your methods to not use things that are not reproducible, like big conferences, motorcycles, public systems, etc. Work like Jesus did, in simple ways that are easy for anyone to do, even if they don’t have money. Equip every believer to share the gospel and start groups among their relatives. In this way you will see far greater fruit in the end. There is a different way to work, the way we see in the New Testament. Let’s return to it and see greater fruit that lasts.
